A quick update on what the summer holds for us. Elderflower Fields now well and truly behind us and was another success – Anita and the kids had a great weekend in a tipi this time! Lots of plans for the coming few weeks which the four of us are looking forward to:
- Celebrating marriages. 2 weddings down (thanks and congrats to JB & gem, and Uncle Jack & Auntie Meg!), 2 more to go.
- Making full use of the garden (especially the trampoline and paddling pool) and our proximity to the beach.
- A week in Cornwall, followed by a family festival at which I’m not working for once.
- And most excitingly for me, our first mini cycle tour!…
I’ll post more once we return, but I’m filled with a mixture of anticipation and trepidation as we prepare for a very short cycle tour next week – our first as a family of four.
We use the double bike trailer all the time and the twins are pretty good in it, but we’ve never done more than about half an hour at a time. Next week we’re packing up our camping stuff and cycling to a beautiful little farm about 25 miles away. Two nights there and then we head back home… It’s hardly a tour at all. More of a gentle bike ride, but we’re hoping that by starting small, it might give us the confidence and pave the way for bigger and bolder tours in the future.
Anita has a shiny new Trek FX3 which is light but more than capable of lugging a trailer and panniers. My Surly LHT is still going strong, albeit with new wheels this summer. We’re planning on having the kids in rear bike seats, with rear panniers underneath, and one of us (probably me) also towing the double trailer. This means loads of space for luggage, plus the option to put one or both of the kids in the trailer if rains heavily.
The rear bike seats are a new addition for us, so we’ll need to get used to riding with the higher centre of gravity, but I think the experience for the kids will be much nicer than being down in the trailer. I think even with light touring set up, we’re going to be about twice the weight compared to what we toured with back in 2012! So we’ll be slow, but that’s kind of the point. Fingers crossed for sunny weather. We’ll let you know how we get on once we return!
